Skin type vs skin condition: what’s the difference? — FUSE Beauty Atelier, Milton

At a glance

  • Skin type is largely genetic and fairly stable.
  • Skin conditions come and go with lifestyle, environment and products.
  • Treat the condition as well as the type for better results.

Your skin type

Your skin type describes how much oil your skin naturally produces. It is largely determined by genetics and tends to be fairly stable, although it can shift with age and hormones. Broadly, skin is described as:

  • Oily — visible shine and enlarged-looking pores across most of the face.
  • Dry — produces little oil and can feel rough or tight.
  • Combination — oilier through the forehead, nose and chin, drier on the cheeks.
  • Balanced — neither particularly oily nor dry.

Your skin condition

A skin condition is something your skin is experiencing right now, and it can change from week to week. Common conditions include:

  • Dehydration — a lack of water (not oil), which can feel tight and look dull.
  • Sensitisation — redness, stinging or reactivity, commonly triggered by environment, stress or over-exfoliation.
  • Congestion — blackheads, blocked pores and breakouts.
  • Uneven tone and pigmentation — driven largely by sun exposure and hormones.
  • Visible ageing — loss of firmness and fine lines.

Why the difference matters

Because type and condition are separate, they frequently overlap: oily skin can be dehydrated, and dry skin can be congested. A common mistake is treating oily skin with harsh, stripping products, which can worsen dehydration and sensitivity. Understanding both helps you choose products that balance oil and support hydration at the same time.

Getting a professional read

Skin is hard to assess in a bathroom mirror. A professional consultation looks at your skin area by area, considers your lifestyle and current routine, and identifies which conditions to prioritise. At Fuse, this assessment is the first step of every Dermalogica facial.
