Planning your event makeup: trials, skin prep and timing
How to plan makeup for a wedding, formal or special occasion — from your trial to the morning of.

At a glance
- A trial lets you and your artist agree on the look in advance.
- Prepare your skin in the weeks before, but avoid trying anything new.
- Plan timing on the day so nothing feels rushed.
Book a trial for big occasions
For weddings and milestone events, a makeup trial lets you try your look in advance, see how it photographs and make adjustments. Bring photos of looks you love — and any you don’t — along with details of your outfit, hair and the event.
Prepare your skin
- Keep your skincare consistent in the weeks leading up to the event.
- Avoid new products or strong treatments close to the day.
- Schedule facials or peels well in advance so skin has time to settle.
- Stay hydrated and moisturise — makeup looks best on comfortable skin.
Plan the order of services
If you are booking several services, order matters. Spray tans are best a day or two before, lash and brow treatments a few days ahead, and makeup on the day itself. Ask your hair stylist and makeup artist how they prefer to coordinate.
On the day
- Arrive with clean, moisturised skin.
- Wear a button-up or loose top that won’t disturb hair or makeup when you change.
- Allow buffer time so you never feel rushed.
- Ask your artist which products to carry for touch-ups.
