At a glance

  • Follow your stylist’s advice on your first wash after colour.
  • Gentle, colour-friendly products and cooler water help colour last.
  • Heat, sun and chlorine are the main causes of fading.

The first few days

Your stylist will tell you how long to wait before your first wash after colour — follow their advice, as it gives colour time to settle. When you do wash, use lukewarm water and a gentle shampoo.

Everyday habits

  • Choose colour-friendly shampoo and conditioner made for your hair type.
  • Wash with lukewarm or cool water — hot water can encourage fading.
  • Squeeze, don’t rub, hair with a towel.
  • Use a weekly mask or treatment to keep lengths soft and strong.

Protect from heat, sun and water

Heat styling, UV exposure and chlorine are among the biggest causes of fading and dryness. Use a heat protectant every time you style, lower the temperature where you can, wear a hat in strong sun, and wet hair with fresh water before swimming.

Book regular maintenance

Regular trims keep ends healthy, and toning or gloss services can refresh colour between full appointments. Ask your stylist when to return for your colour.
